A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
